|
|
DETAILS:
13-year-old Matthew Margolies was last seen alive near the corner of Pemberwick Road and Comly Avenue on Friday, August 31st, 1984. Matthew was a regular and avid young fisherman, and he had gone off that day to get some fish out of the Byram River.
Matthew was reported missing after his mother, Maryann, became worried about his failure to show up that early evening. Days passed as police searched the river area. On Sunday, Maryann placed an ad in the local paper appealing for help in finding her son. On Monday, she and her boyfriend (later husband) took up the search on their own, but to no avail.
Volunteer fire policeman Fred Lambert, an experienced searcher, had better results. On September 5, 1984, he discovered one of little Matthew's sneakers, and then later found the body of the boy himself. Matthew had been dead for a time, his body left in a shallow grave. He had multiple stab wounds, and his chest had suffered severe compression - as if someone or something had pounced up and down on him. A 10-inch knife was foundnear the body several days later, and police confirmed it was in fact the weapon used to stab Matthew.
There are a number of discrepencies in this case, with many questions left unanswered. Much time has passed since this terrible crime was committed, but Matthew's killer is still every bit as guilty. There was one suspect in the case early on - a young man known as a bully in the area who had also threatened another boy using a knife. But no arrest was ever made.
