Last month, we were all treated with a rather popular CBS 3 story on prostitution, where reporter Liz Tufts posed as a prostitute (and soon found out just how successful a pretty woman could be while trolling the streets for cash). The Springfield Intruder now follows up that story with a little survey of its own. For statistics, I took a trip to the Springfield Police Department’s arrest logs and randomly selected a batch of arrests from the past sixty days. In all, twenty nine prostitution arrests were randomly selected for this article. There could have actually been more prostitution arrests inside the logs, but the 60-day listing is rather voluminous and so these twenty nine should suffice for our little profile. Also, two Republican stories were referenced for additional information (see here and here).
FIRST, A NOTE TO PROSPECTIVE JOHNS: If, while trolling for paid sex, you happen upon a healthy, pretty prostitute walking the streets of Springfield, you should know that there is perhaps a 99.99% chance she is actually either a.) a Springfield Police officer, or b.) a local news reporter. This being the case, there is an excellent chance you are either going to be a.) arrested for soliciting sex for a fee, b.) interviewed about soliciting sex for a fee, or c.) both a and b.
Now, on to the survey….
AGE GROUPS:
First, it should be mentioned that in the 60-day sampling that was retrieved, there were three instances of repeat arrests. For the purpose of this survey, when counting ages and residencies, the second offense of those three repeats were nixed, bringing us to a net total of 26 women arrested for prostitution (or “common street walking”).
The sampling found that out of 26 women arrested for prostitution in the 60-day time period, only three were in their twenties (with no one younger than 23 being arrested). Eleven women were in their 30s, ten were in their 40s, and two were in their fifties (one was 58!).
One unfortunate woman was arrested mere days away from her 45th birthday. (Happy birthday, Diana!)
RESIDENCIES:
The random sampling found that nearly all of the women arrested for prostitution actually live in Springfield (which just goes to show that at least some folks come to Springfield for jobs). Two women hailed from Chicopee. One woman traveled to Springfield all the way from Pittsfield. Another woman recorded “no address” on the police log.
Out of all the women selected from the logs, only one was recorded as being homeless (a Springfield resident).
TIME OF ARREST:
Just like reporter Liz Tufts discovered on her brief foray into faux prostitution, the most active time for arrests was in broad daylight (no pun intended).
ETHNIC ORIGIN:
Since this article used the SPD’s online arrest logs, which have no photos, this section is largely inconclusive. It was interesting to note, however, that very few of the women – only three, in fact – had Latino-looking last names (and one of the three women actually had an English first and middle name, so even she may not be Latino). This is notable only due to the fact that Springfield has a rather large Latino population, so one might assume there to be an arrest record reflective of that. But this turned out to not be the case – at least not in the 60-day sampling. Why is this? Beats the hell out of me, but perhaps it may have something to do with Latinos being, by and large, a decidedly religious demographic and perhaps somewhat socially conservative. Either that or at least some Latino women have English-looking names.
Or it could simply be that Latino chicks have substantially more pride in themselves.
