Visiting Chicopee
by Bill Dusty
With little to do on a Saturday afternoon, I decided to visit our neighbor to the north, the City of Chicopee.

I took a trip downtown, first, where I snapped this photo of Chicopee City Hall. Notice the stretch of train track to the bottom-left. It’s actually the only thing left of that run of track – the track before and after it has been removed.

Just to the right of City Hall is the old Chicopee Public Library. A sign on the front door said the library had moved to Front Street.

Here are a couple of views of the canal that runs parallel to the Chicopee River. The above photo is looking east, the below photo is looking west (toward the nearby Connecticut River).

People often knock Springfield for its desolate downtown district and closed-up shops. But downtown Chicopee was every bit as quiet – lonely, even – as downtown Springfield on a weekend afternoon.

As I walked around Chicopee’s streets, I saw that this little city had more than its own share of shuttered businesses.

The Munich Haus looks like a very nice place, though it appeared a bit slow when I passed by it. I believe I recall going to a wedding there some years ago.

The Market Square Billiards. Years ago my friends and I would visit here for beers and games of pool.
