Big Shoes and Dillweedz Cafe Come to Downtown Springfield

by Bill Dusty

Downtown Springfield is a bustling little city on weekdays as downtown workers and visitors go about their business, visiting shops and stopping for a bite to eat in the many cafes, taverns and restaurants.

New to the downtown scene is the Dillweedz Cafe, a small cafe whose name conjures up images of Northampton’s little sandwich shops. The Dillweedz is located on Main Street, across from the MassMutual Center where Frigo’s used to have their outlet deli. The Dillweedz is open for breakfast and lunch, with a menu that includes steak & eggs, sandwiches, soups, salads and wraps. (Check out their online menu here.)

The “Art & Soles” sneakers are popping up all over downtown Springfield these days. When I was wandering around, a few had already been placed, while pre-positioned cement bases marked the spots of future displays.

Artist Mike Manzi, above, does some touch-up work on his giant sneaker. Small world that it is, Manzi and I share a mutual friend – Springfield resident Mary Scholtz.

-

The big sneakers are all made of fiberglass. A total of 19 of them will be on display in downtown Springfield until October.

Across from Tower Square, meanwhile, the Farmers Market was in full swing.

A future home of another giant sneaker, located at Court Square. I spotted other cement bases in front of the MassMutual Center and Monarch Place plaza (by the Bank of America).
