The end came quickly and – in many eyes – unexpectedly. Just two weeks ago, Democratic candidate and presumed Senator-in-waiting Martha Coakley rested easy with a double-digit lead at the polls. At the time, the President of the United States, still counting on the Senate to pass his health care agenda, saw no need to venture into the “safe zone” that is liberal Massachusetts in order to support her.
By the time he did feel the need fly into the state this past weekend, is was already too late. Leading up to this Tuesday’s election, there were reports in the media that President Obama’s aides had told him that Coakley was doomed. The Coakley campaign itself, meanwhile, revved up television ad campaigns in the final days in an attempt to vilify Brown as someone who would have no mercy for rape victims and be entirely uncaring about elderly issues.
It demonification campaign didn’t work.
Both the Coakley campaign and its Democratic Party advisers seemed too smug in their ways to perceive the danger that loomed on the electoral horizon. As a CNN article noted from a debate held last week, the Democrats were apparently incapable of understanding that the political seat being contested wasn’t “theirs” to assign as they pleased:
Asked in a debate last week if he was willing to sit in Kennedy’s seat and block health care reform, Brown replied, “With all due respect, it’s not the Kennedys’ seat, and it’s not the Democrats’ seat, it’s the people’s seat.”
.
That statement was confirmed on Tuesday.

History has been made…the second shot heard round the world.
[Asked in a debate last week if he was willing to sit in Kennedy’s seat and block health care reform, Brown replied, “With all due respect, it’s not the Kennedys’ seat, and it’s not the Democrats’ seat, it’s the people’s seat.”]
That’s the key phrase – “It’s the people’s seat”.
This election was so high-profile – given that Mass is so liberal, I thought that Coakley had it nailed. But I was wrong. I could hardly believe it when I discovered that Brown had won.
I’m glad that he won. I hope that he will always remember the [key phrase] and prove to be a true Statesman/Senator and not just another career politician.
Maybe it was the fact that he drives a truck that helped to get him elected. We the People dig pick-up trucks and fast cars.
Limo’s stink.
The only problem with politicians is they are down to earth until they enter the hallowed halls of Washington DC. Something happens and they lose their identity. Constantly bombarded by lobbyists they eventually give in to the nonsense. A good Senator or US Rep should hire the people that will keep the lobbyists at bay while they do the business of the people who elected them to serve. Scott Brown seems like that “down to earth” guy. Let’s see what he becomes and if he can get anything done in the next two years. Yes, its a great change but it will take a great man to overcome the diversions.
