Maple High Six Corners Neighborhood Council President Melvin Edwards accepts a grant from WMECO officials last June.

Last June, the Western Massachusetts Electric Company awarded a $1,000 grant to the Maple High Six Corners Neighborhood Council for the planting of four trees in their community. This past week, those trees began to take root at the triangle of Central, Pine and Florence Streets.

The trees were delivered on Friday (September 11), and volunteers from LIVE UNITED, a nationwide community program created by the United Way to help promote community volunteerism, were on hand to dig the holes and hoist the trees into place. The four trees consisted of two Princeton variety American Elms and two Sergeant Cherry trees.

Springfield Parks Department Manager Mike Tully was also on scene to help unload the trees and oversee the operation for the City. In a dual role, Tully’s non-profit group, Springfield Arbor Allies, also consulted on how to properly plant the trees. The Parks Department has partnered with LIVE UNITED in the past on other park beautification efforts. The five volunteers at the tree planting, all employees at MassMutual, showed up just after 8:30am on Friday to get things started.
