Scenes from the KSB Kick-Off

by Bill Dusty

corner-bottle Keep Springfield Beautiful (KSB), the local affiliate of Keep America Beautiful, held its 2009 kick-off event fundraiser on Thursday, April 2, raising over $1100 on the evening. The event, held at the Red Rose restaurant in downtown Springfield, marks the official start of KSB’s 2009 effort to help rid the City of Homes of its most littered streets and properties. KSB will be conducting its annual citywide cleanup on Saturday, May 2, from 8:00am to 1:00pm, as part of the nationwide Great American Cleanup.

At the kick-off, the banquet room was packed with supporters and volunteers. Pizza was served, and a raffle was held to help raise funds. Donations were also accepted from those who attended. City officials who attended the event included Springfield City Councilors Patrick Markey, Bud Williams and James Ferrera III. On hand, too, was KSB service award winner Charles Contant.

For the May 2 cleanup, the city will be divided up into four “zones” where volunteers will fan out to designated streets and neighborhoods to pick up litter and bulk trash. Each zone will have an assembly point where volunteers can meet or signup to participate. Individual volunteers can be grouped with parties or they can form their own groups. Volunteers – individuals or groups – can also signup beforehand (see the KSB Web site for details). The four Zones are listed below.

- Zone One: Bay Area, McKnight, Six Corners, South End. Assembly Area – Rebecca Johnson School.
- Zone Two: East Springfield, Liberty Heights, North End, Armory Quadrangle, Atwater Park. Assembly Area – Chestnut Middle School.
- Zone Three: Indian Orchard, Pine Point, Sixteen Acres. Assembly Area – Duggan Middle School.
- Zone Four: Forest park, East Forest Park. Assembly Area – Forest Park Middle School.
