Chinese Dance Comes to Hartford

A touch of Chinese culture visits New England this coming March as the Divine Performing Arts (DPA) is set to put on three shows at The Bushnell, in Hartford, CT.

The DPA is a non-profit dance and music company based out of New York and comprised of artists from all over the world. Each performance includes close to twenty songs and dances, according to the company’s brochure. The company has performed in 70 cities throughout the world since its first season back in 2006, including shows at such places as Radio City Music Hall in New York and the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C.

“The company seeks to breathe new life into traditional Chinese culture while providing audiences everywhere with an experience of sublime beauty,” reads the DPA Web site. “Divine Performing Arts is a triumph of collaboration, bringing together leading dancers, choreographers, and musicians from around the world. Its productions are unique in being not only tremendously fun and entertaining, but also educational, enriching, and uplifting.”

The DPA notes that it is not affiliated with the Chinese Communist government, where “the traditional arts have suffered for decades.” The company includes practitioners of Falun Gong, a “spiritual meditation” practice that has been widely persecuted in China.

The DPA consists of three dance companies and two orchestras, along with choreographers, composers, and other “artistic staff,” according to their Web site.

The performances at The Bushnell (Mortensen Hall) will be on Saturday, March 21, at 2:00pm and 7:30pm, and on Sunday, March 22 at 2:00pm. The ticket prices are $95, $75, $60, $45, and $35, depending on seating. Children under 4-years-old are not admitted, according to the brochure.
