China in the Spotlight

by Bill Dusty

China has been on the rise for over thirty years, now, due in large part to the economic reforms of former leader Deng Xiaoping in the 1970s. Today, the Communist nation has the fourth largest economy in the world, and is poised to join the United States as the second global Superpower.

A regional program sponsored by a partnership between the Springfield Public Forum, the Springfield City Library, and the American International College Honors Program will be spotlighting China’s culture beginning this Thursday and continuing through the first three weeks of November. The program, entitled The City Thinks: Considering China, will start things off with a reception and lecture on Thursday, October 30, at 6:00pm at American International College’s Karen Sprague Cultural Arts Center Lobby and West Wing Gallery. The event will also feature a performance by renowned erhu (Chinese violin) player WenWei “Wayne” Wang.

Five more events through November will lead up to a Public Forum lecture on November 13, at 7:30pm at Springfield Symphony Hall by NPR bureau chief Rob Gifford, author of China Road.

There will also be a Shaolin Kung Fu demonstration class on November 14 (3:00pm, Forest Park Branch Library) and an event sponsored by the Springfield Garden Club on November 21 and 22, at the Wilbraham and Monson Academy.

In addition to these scheduled events, there are ongoing events at various Springfield City Libraries and area colleges. (See program overview, here.)
