Stopping by the Hall of Fame
by Bill Dusty
While out and about last week, I stopped by the Basketball Hall of Fame. Earlier this year, there was a mini restaurant controversy as the owners of Max’s Tavern, located in the Hall of Fame building, contested the planned arrival of a new Samuel’s Tavern on the opposite side of the complex. The matter was eventually resolved, however, and work on the new Samuel’s is nearing completion and it is currently open for business.

Above is Max’s Tavern, with the restaurant “Pazzo” (link warning: annoying music at website) seen to the left side of the building. I’ve only been in Max’s a couple of times, having lunch with former Channel 40 news guy Jim Polito.

The Onyx Fusion Bar & Restaurant is located across the parking lot from the BB Hall of Fame, where the old BB Hall of Fame once did business. I’ve only been in the Onyx once, earlier this year, and their lunch menu at the time was fairly limited. I’ve since heard that they may be altering and/or adding to the menu selection. The music on their website is annoying.

Here is the new Samuel’s Tavern, on the opposite side of the BB Hall building. That “J. Quincy’s” next to Samuel’s was a surprise. I’ve heard it’s a high-end add-on to Samuel’s. If so, that would seem to negate the owner’s contention during the Restaurant War that Samuel’s will be catering to a different crowd than Max’s tavern.

Across the parking lot from the south side of the BB Hall of Fame is the Hilton Garden Inn. And next to that (left) is a Uno Chicago Grill restaurant, which is my regular lunchtime stop on weekdays.

On the south-side parking lot, they have these cars mounted on display for folks to look at.

While I was at the BB Hall of Fame, I came across this “StoryCorps” trailer. The folks there were taking sign-ups for reservations to do “common folk” interviews with anyone who has a story to tell. The deadline for getting a reservation has already passed, but folks may still get a shot if there are any cancellations. The StoryCorps folks will be here for the next month doing recordings. You can find out more about the NPR-sponsored program here. If you have any questions about this particular StoryCorps visit (at the BB Hall of Fame), you can email the local organizer, Whitney, at whenrylester@storycorps.net
