Around The City

by Bill Dusty

Last weekend, I held a podcast interview with two members of Pioneer Valley Advocates for Commuter Rail over at Springfield’s Central Library. You can listen to that podcast here. You can check out what’s going on with commuter rail and catch up on the latest news here.

While wandering about downtown Springfield on Tuesday, scrounging for story material, I passed by the Grapevine Liqours building on Main Street and noticed it has a new business, “Appliance Plus,” located there. As the sign indicates, Appliance Plus is located just across the street from the legendary Red Rose restaurant.

At the city’s center, I was walking along Main Street when I caught sight of two vehicles getting ticketed. Pictured above is a WHYN mini-van that just got tagged. The black SUV parked behind it shared the same fate. There was apparently some interest in the proximity of the WHYN vehicle to the “no Parking” sign, as a pedestrian checks out the sign. It’s a close call, and the folks doing the ticketing appeared to be talking it over prior to slapping on the ticket.

Just to show that Northhampton isn’t the only place where folks come to show off their cool homemade signs, these folks here (above) were on hand at the soon-to-be-closed Federal Building on Main Street to protest “Big Oil” and advocate for clean energy alternatives. Pictured above are Marian Duggan-Markos (L), John Mahoney (C), and another demonstrator who opted not to give her name.

These folks were happy to pose for an Intruding photo.

The group passed out literature sponsored by “MoveOn Political Action.” The literature decried U.S. Presidential candidate John McCain’s proposed energy plan, which includes drilling for oil, and listed alternative funding opportunities.

While I was there, I was posed a question by one of the participants: Don’t you think Democrats have more fun?

Actually, I think Democrats and Republicans party about equally well. The only noticeable difference perhaps being what types of cars they arrive in.

I know them all, southendlive. I also live in the South End. I’m planning on *eventually* doing a video street tour of Main Street, from the south to the north. It will probably have to be in different parts, though.
