Controversy Highlights Chelan Brown’s Campaign

by Bill Dusty

11th Hampden District State Representative candidate Chelan Brown thought that her biggest hurdle in running against incumbent Benjamin Swan would be her residency status. As it turns out, that problem may just be one of many.

Brown has been maintaining for all it’s worth that her actual residence – since December of 2006 – has been 5 Olney Avenue, which would make her eligible to run against Swan. But her legal residence up until recently has been 117 Balboa Drive. Chelan reportedly used that residence to vote in this past February’s Democratic Primary.

Adding to Brown’s residency woes is the fact that the address she listed with the State of Massachusetts when registering as an officer with her civic group, AWAKE, just this past April 17th, is 28 Beaumont Terrace, in the city’s Forest Park neighborhood.

Meanwhile, an even more scandalous development has surfaced as Chelan Brown’s recently created website has folks over at Masslive’s Springfield forum fuming. Apparently, many passages from Brown’s site have obviously been lifted from other campaign sites across the nation. Below is just a sampling of some of the similarities…

Now, is it entirely possible that Brown’s campaign simply “borrowed” these passages from her peers rather than outright stealing them, ala’ the Obama/Patrick exchange of slogans?

Or, on a more sinister note, could it be as someone else suggested – the website is actually a fake?

For Chelan’s sake, one would certainly hope for either of those two scenarios. Otherwise, it would appear that Brown has much to learn about organizing a political campaign…

And more to learn, too, about who to have running it.

There appears to be controversy brewing both outside and inside the Chelan Brown Campaign.
