BROOKINGS SCHOOL KIDS TO RECEIVE DONATIONS
On January 29, 2010, members of the civic group Springfield Forward will be gathering at the Elias Brookings School in Springfield where donations of coats, scarves and gloves will be offered to needy children.
“This past year we were able to donate hundreds of winter gear items to Sumner Avenue School students including coats, scarves, gloves, hats, boots, shoes, socks, and toiletries,” said Springfield Forward’s Ellen Pappas. “We are so excited to begin working with a second school, the Elias Brookings School, by making a donation of winter gear to their students, and by giving Gianna Allentuck , the Brookings School Counselor, information on our ‘Tell Me Your Story’ literacy program .”
The “Tell Me Yor Story” literacy program helps children to write, illustrate and publish their own stories, said Pappas.
“The greatest reward,” she said, “is seeing the looks on the children’s faces when they see their stories published in final form, with their photo and bio on the inside cover! Priceless.”
RENAISSANCE WINS THREE-WAY TIE FOR FIRST TO WIN
Via World Affairs Council Press Release:
SPRINGFIELD – On Saturday, January 23, the Springfield Renaissance School emerged from a three way tie with teams representing Central and 2006 WorldQuest champions Commerce to win the World Affairs Council of Western Massachusetts fifth annual Academic WorldQuest competition at Western New England College repeating their 2009 victory. The competition featured ten rounds of questions on topics such as current events, pandemics, genocide, international migration trends and the Sultanate of Oman. Brenda Garton moderated.
To date the World Affairs Council limited participation in Academic WorldQuest to teams representing Springfield public high schools, but this year they opened eligibility to public and private schools from Springfield and the seven contiguous communities. Early College High School (2008 Champions) and the High School of Science & Technology (2007 champions) also participated. Competing for the first time this year were Wilbraham & Monson Academy and Holyoke Catholic High School.
Renaissance will now go on to compete nationally at Academic WorldQuest 2010, hosted by the World Affairs Councils of America at the National Press Club in Washington on April 24. Academic WorldQuest is funded locally by the Raymond E. and Mildred G. Clark Foundation Fund, Bank of America, Trustee at the Community Foundation of Western Massachusetts; St. Germain Investment Management; Bacon Wilson, PC and Rediker Software.
BILL DUSTY ON BAX & O’BRIEN
I will apparently be making a second appearance on the Rock102 morning show, Bax & O’Brien. My segment is scheduled for 7:00am on this coming Friday morning (January 29th). Bax & O’Brien recently recieved a Proclamation from the Springfield City Council for their work on their annual Mayflower Marathon charity event, held Thanksgiving week, which benefits the Open Pantry.
I have no idea what we will be talking about, but I suppose my vote for them as Best Radio Show in the Valley in my last post (see here) may have influenced their decision. Either that, or they are getting pretty desperate
