State Rep. Wagner Violated Campaign Finance Law

by Bill Dusty

In a story in the Republican today, writer Holly Angelo reports that state Representative Joseph Wagner, D-Chicopee, was found to be in violation of state campaign finance law when the name of his chief of staff appeared on the letterhead of invitations sent out for a fundraising event.

Office of Campaign and Political Finance Director Michael J. Sullivan also suggested a change in the design of the letterhead itself, as it strongly resembles official state government stationary. From the story:

Sullivan also suggested to Wagner that the design of the letterhead might raise issues under the state conflict of interest law. The letterhead looks like official Statehouse stationery, but is green instead of blue and does not include the state seal.

This story first came to the Intruder’s attention after articles by both the Chicopee Register and the Republican took the opportunity to allow Wagner to not only ridicule the Massachusetts Republican Party for bringing up suspected violations (a rant which included heavy doses of name calling), but also gave him a free stage to tee-off on the Republicans for an entirely unrelated Legislative voting issue (funding for seniors).

At the time, Wagner scoffed at any wrongdoing, calling the Republican Party charges “baseless.” And with his liberal media pals eagerly writing down his quotes, he denounced the Republican Party as the “gang that couldn’t shoot straight.” (LMAO! – Ha, ha! That’s a good one, Joe!)

Well, Joe, looks like their aim wasn’t so bad after all.

Sullivan termed his letter to Wagner informing him of the violation as “educational,” in that there appeared to be no purposeful intent to violate the law. And by golly, I’ve just got to believe that.

Don’t you?
