Okay, so the high drama of the New Hampshire Primary is over, and the winners and losers can kick their Spin Machines into high gear. But we, the general electorate, are beginning to get a clearer picture of what is going on here…
For the Democrats, it’s a battle now between Hillary! and Barack Obama. All the others – including Edwards (sorry soccer moms) – are vying for VP consideration. Bill Richardson, Governor of New Mexico, may also be chugging along for the purpose of future name recognition. I have no idea why Dennis Kucinich continues to embarrass himself. Only extreme left-wing whackjobs seem attracted to him.

On the Republican side, things are a little more murky. The Iowa and New Hampshire results don’t really mean much to such southern-vote hopefuls as Mike Huckabee and Rudy Giuliani, the latter of whom bailed on New Hampshire entirely in order to concentrate on Florida. On the other hand, Mitt Romney has got to be hurting after this one – despite his outward show of confidence. The next swath of primaries will determine if he drops out or not. Meanwhile, John McCain – who was practically a joking afterthought last summer, has managed to capture a first place finish in New Hampshire and thus breathe new life into his candidacy. Folks might want to remember, though, that he also won New Hampshire in his election bid against George W. Bush back in 2000, only to be left in the dust as the primary season wore on.
So it’s on to the next stage in our national election year soap opera. Mitt Romney is hoping for Michigan, Giuliani is hoping for Florida. A failure by these candidates to win those respective states will severely damage their presidential aspirations for 2008 – and will probably spell the doom of Romney’s bid. But the Republican candidate field is tight – and thus far, decidedly uninspiring.
Hillary! regains ground she lost in Iowa. Her battle with Obama is going to get extremely ugly now as they flail away at each other in a tight, two-way battle for the nomination. No more tears for Hillary! now, though – that ploy only works once, and oftentimes fails even then.
