The following is a press release issued by the Committee to Elect Karen Powell. Powell is a candidate for the Springfield City Council.

“PROMOTE SPRINGFIELD” URGES CITY COUNCIL CANDIDATE, KAREN POWELL

“An issue I most want to embrace is how to promote the city of Springfield to bring business and taxpayers to the city. We are bombarded by bad news and negativity and people who are not from Springfield hear only the problems without hearing the positives,” stated city council candidate, Karen Powell.

“We must market ourselves and develop a program that tells people just how great we are!” Powell continued.

As a city councilor, Powell would call on the City Council to become more proactive in working with our planning and economic development department, businesses and the state.

We need to identify vacant and salvageable commercial and industrial real estate and look at their best use. Identifying potential companies that would relocate here from outside the region is a major part of this plan. Biomedic companies would be the first and most logical to approach. Powell stressed that this is a major part of helping the city to move forward.

Some of Springfield’s positives are:

  • Our residential housing stock is among the most attractive, historic and inexpensive in the region.
  • Our parks are numerous and among the most beautiful in the area.
  • We have 10 libraries, wonderful museums and the Seuss exhibit.
  • We have farmers markets, youth organizations and senior centers.
  • Within the city boundaries, Springfield Technical Community College, Springfield College, American International College, and Western New England College with many other colleges in bordering communities.
  • We have Symphony Hall, City Stage and the Armory.
  • We have a world class hospital that is a division of Tufts Medical School and is a teaching hospital.
  • We are the home of one of the largest ground transportation companies in the country, Peter Pan Bus Lines.
  • We are looking at a new State Street corridor, a Federal Courthouse and River’s Landing, a $14 million conversion of the old Hall of Fame.
  • We are at the crossroads of New England. You can get to any location from New York to Boston within a few hours.

Powell stated, “To sum it up, we can offer cultural, educational and recreation amenities that can’t be rivaled anywhere. We are a small, inexpensive city in which to live, and now, we need to get the message out!”

Powell believes that this will help to attract viable businesses to this area that will enhance the tax base as well as people to support restaurants, entertainment and the arts. They will visit the museums and respect and enjoy our historic architecture.
